Celebrating Gogi’s 2nd Birthday: A Guide to the Best Feed for Healthy Cows
Today is a very special day for our family! Our beloved cow, Gogi, turns two years old today. I named her after the revered deity Lord Goga. Raising her has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and over the last two years, I have learned so much about what keeps a cow happy, healthy, and thriving.
Here is a glimpse into Gogi’s daily routine, her unique personality, and a breakdown of the best nutritional diet for cows to ensure great health and optimal milk production.
Gogi’s Delightful Daily Routine
Gogi has a wonderful personality that brings immense joy to our home. Her daily feeding routine has become a beautiful ritual for us.
- The "Atta" Demand: Whenever I go to feed her fodder, she looks at me with deep, expressive eyes. She won't eat her regular fodder until I mix in a little bit of atta (wheat flour) for her. Once she gets her favourite treat, she contentedly settles down to eat her meal.
- The Communication: When she finishes her food, she stands by her post, looks around, and starts walking in circles around the peg to let us know she is still hungry.
- Family Care: If I am around, I immediately replenish her feed. If I am away, my mother steps in to make sure Gogi never goes hungry. Watching her grow and interact with us is a truly blissful experience.
What Do Cows Eat? (A Complete Diet Breakdown)
A balanced diet is crucial for a cow's growth, energy, and digestive health. Gogi enjoys a diverse mix of dry and green roughage:
- Wheat Straw (Bhusa): This serves as an excellent source of dry roughage and forms the base of her daily meals.
- Paddy Straw (Para): Rice straw is another great dry forage option that keeps her full and satisfied.
- Green Grass & Vegetables: Cows love fresh green grass. Interestingly, Gogi also enjoys eating taro roots (arbi) and various other green leafy materials, which provide essential vitamins.
The Secret to High Milk Production: Grains & Supplements
If you own dairy cattle, providing the right concentrates can significantly boost both milk quality and quantity. Based on standard cattle farming practices, here are the best additions to your cow's feed:
1. Essential Grains and Bran
Grains supply the energy cows need for daily activities and milk production. You can mix the following ingredients into their daily fodder:
- Corn (Maize) & Pearl Millet (Bajra)
- Wheat & Wheat Bran (Choker):
Pro-Tip: Always get these grains coarsely ground at a local mill rather than feeding them as a fine powder. Coarsely ground grains are much easier for a cow’s complex stomach to digest and help yield better milk production.
2. Oil Cakes (Khali)
Oil cakes are the nutrient-rich residue left over after extracting oil from seeds. They are an absolute powerhouse of protein for cattle.
- Mustard Cake (Sarson ki Khali)
- Groundnut Cake (Moongfali ki Khali)
Adding these oil cakes to your cow's daily ration provides the necessary fat and protein structure required to increase milk yield and keep the cattle robust.
Conclusion
Taking care of a cow like Gogi requires patience, love, and a proper understanding of their nutritional needs. By balancing dry straw, fresh greens, coarsely ground grains, and protein-rich oil cakes, you can ensure your cattle remain healthy and high-yielding.
