A mound of earth, a well, and Baba in the form of a serpent: The true story of 'Hanse Bir Baba'.

The Mystery of Hanse Bir Baba: A Ancient Temple of Miracles and Divine Power

There are certain places where the boundary between the material world and the divine becomes beautifully thin. Today, on August 25, 2026, I am compelled to write about a sacred site I have known intimately since my childhood: the Hanse Bir Baba Temple. Whether a traditional deity resides within its walls or not is something I cannot prove, but I know with absolute certainty that an undeniable spiritual energy vibrates here.
For generations, our village has passed down the mystical belief that a sacred serpent, revered as Hanse Bir Baba, guards the space behind the shrine.

The Ancient Legend: The Ascetic and the Divine Transformation

My grandfather used to tell me stories of a holy Sadhu (ascetic) who lived on this land decades ago. Back then, the landscape was drastically different. Where the temple stands today, there were only high earthen mounds (bheet), bordered by vast, deep ponds and an old freshwater well. The Sadhu was known for his spiritual healing touch; whenever locals suffered from severe health ailments, they would visit his humble abode, and he would miraculously cure them.
Years rolled by until one fateful day, the villagers went to seek his blessings but found his seat empty. They called out his name repeatedly, searching the mounds and fields, but there was no trace of him.
Suddenly, a disembodied voice echoed from behind the earthen mound: "I am here."
The villagers rushed to the spot but found no one standing there. Confused, someone shouted, "Baba, where exactly are you?"
The voice replied calm and clear, "I am inside the well."
Thinking the old ascetic had accidentally fallen in, everyone ran to the edge of the well. What they saw inside froze them with terror and awe—a majestic snake of a uniquely radiant color was calmly sitting atop a giant tortoise. Terrified by this otherworldly sight, the villagers fled back to their homes to share the shocking news.
That very night, the Sadhu appeared in a villager’s dream to provide closure, explaining, "My time as a human had come to an end. I used my yogic powers to take this divine form, and I shall reside here forever to protect this land." As dawn broke, the dream was shared with the community, prompting the locals to pool their money together and construct three small, beautiful temples in his honor.

Childhood Memories and the Changing Landscape

I still hold fond memories of my childhood when my own Baba used to take us to this beautiful oasis. The original temple surroundings were breathtaking, filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming jasmine and roses, while the adjacent pond was covered in stunning pink lotus flowers.
Sadly, time and human intervention have altered that pristine beauty:
  • The Reconstruction: Some years later, members of the Chaurasia family demolished the original structures to rebuild the temples from scratch. While the new temple looks decent, it lacks the raw, ancient charm of the old shrines.
  • The Loss of Nature: Driven by financial greed, a former village head ordered the heavy excavation of the pond. In doing so, the ancient trees lining the banks were ruthlessly chopped down, and the historic well was completely demolished. Today, the once-abundant lotus flowers have entirely vanished.

A Real-Life Miracle: The Day the JCB Machine Stopped

Despite the environmental damage, the divine power of Hanse Bir Baba remains untouched. I personally witnessed a modern miracle during the pond's excavation process.
The village elders had strictly warned the excavation crew not to touch or dig the holy soil immediately surrounding the temple structure. Disregarding the spiritual warning, the JCB operator insisted on lowering his heavy metallic bucket into the restricted zone.
Instantly, a shocking event occurred. The moment the bucket touched the sacred earth, the heavy machinery shut down completely, and the operator collapsed, losing consciousness right in his seat. The panicked crew pulled him out and rushed him to the local hospital, but the doctors could not revive him.
Terrified of the unfolding situation, the owner of the machinery returned to the village to seek advice. The locals explained the history of the holy ascetic and advised him to seek forgiveness directly from the deity. The owner immediately offered prayers, repented for the disrespect, and distributed Prasad. Miraculously, shortly after the offering was made, the operator regained full consciousness at the hospital! However, despite multiple mechanical efforts, that specific JCB machine could never be started again. The crew eventually had to load the dead machine onto a flatbed truck and leave the village permanently.

Worship, Rituals, and the Annual Phenomenon

Today, the Hanse Bir Baba temple remains a vibrant hub of daily worship. The crowd multiplies significantly during the festival of Nag Panchami, where a grand community feast (Bhandara) is organized for hundreds of devotees who come to offer milk and prayers.
You might treat this account as mere rural folklore, but the universe leaves its own signs. To this day, a powerful bolt of natural lightning strikes the exact same spot near the temple every single year during the monsoon, without ever damaging the main shrine. It stands as a silent testimony to the immense cosmic energy residing here.
