Spiritual journeys often come with unexpected adventures. Today, on July 29, 2026, I am sharing my recent pilgrimage to the holy Maa Chandrika Devi Dham, located in the historical town of Buxar, Unnao. I visited this sacred shrine yesterday, on August 28, 2026, navigating through heavy monsoon rains to seek the blessings of the Divine Mother right before the auspicious festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Our journey began exceptionally early at 4:00 AM. My uncle and I set out on my motorcycle. Initially, it was just a light drizzle, but as we progressed, the skies opened up, and it started pouring heavily. Drenched to the bone and with near-zero road visibility, we took temporary shelter at a roadside house. As soon as the rain stopped, we resumed riding. Shortly after, the downpour started again. Since we had to return home early for festival preparations, we decided to push through the rain and safely reached the holy banks of Buxar.
Where is the Temple Located?
The famous Maa Chandrika and Ambika Devi Dham is beautifully situated on the banks of the sacred river Ganges in the Buxar area of Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh.
This highly revered pilgrimage site attracts thousands of devotees from far and wide. It is firmly believed that any heartfelt wish made at this shrine is fulfilled by the Goddess. A major spiritual highlight of this place is the grand Ganga Aarti, which is performed with deep devotion on the eve of every full moon night (Purnima).
To Whom is the Temple Dedicated?
The main sanctum of this historic temple complex is dedicated to Goddess Chandrika and her divine sister, Goddess Ambika.
Apart from the main deities, the complex houses several other sacred shrines:
- Maa Ganga Temple: Dedicated to the holy river Ganges.
- Lord Bhole Nath Shrine: A peaceful spot dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Maa Sharada Temple: Located a short distance away, housing a grand idol of Goddess Sharada.
- Lord Hanuman Temple: A powerful shrine dedicated to Bajrang Bali.
The Monthly Purnima Bhandara
Every month on the day of the full moon (Purnima), the temple management organizes a massive Bhandara (community feast) where thousands of pilgrims are served holy prasad. The riverbank features beautifully constructed Ghats (stone steps) where devotees take a ritualistic bath before entering the temple.
My Personal Pilgrimage Experience and Rituals
When we arrived at the Dham, the morning crowd was quite manageable. The water level of the Ganga River was exceptionally high and flowing rapidly due to the monsoon season. Considering the strong currents, I advised my uncle to stay safely on the steps and watch our belongings while I went in for a holy dip. Once I finished, he took his turn. We then filled a bottle with the holy Gangajal, secured it to our bike, and walked toward the temple entrance.
Puja Offerings and the Ancient Peepal Tree
At the flower stalls, various Prasad baskets were available ranging from 10 to 20 rupees, up to premium variants. We purchased a comprehensive 50-rupee Prasad basket which included:
- A sacred coconut (Nariyal)
- A colourful Chunri (holy cloth)
- Fresh flowers and incense sticks (Agarbatti)
- Traditional sugar crystals (Batasha)
We entered the inner sanctum, offered our prayers to Maa Chandrika and Maa Ambika, and experienced immense mental peace. Following the local tradition, we went to the ancient Peepal tree located within the complex to break our coconut as an offering. After performing separate rituals at the Ganga shrine and seeking blessings at the Hanuman temple, we concluded our darshan.

The Journey Back Home
After purchasing some sweets and dry prasad for our family, we began our return journey. The monsoon weather challenged us once again as it started raining heavily midway. We took shelter under a local shop's awning until the weather cleared up, and finally reached home safely, carrying the divine blessings of Maa Chandrika.
Conclusion
Maa Chandrika Devi Dham in Buxar is a perfect amalgamation of nature’s beauty and deep spiritual energy. Standing on the banks of the mighty Ganges and praying to the Goddess is an experience every believer must have.
